Considering beam lengths and pallet sizes within your storage space is fundamental to the efficiency of your storage system. Choosing the right beams and pallets for your warehouse ensures efficiency within your storage space and ensures your storage system meets your structural capacity needs.
When considering beam and pallet sizes, the options seem endless. But, to ensure you are choosing the perfect storage system for your industrial space, then you must first understand your specific needs and requirements. There are many things to consider when choosing your beam and pallet sizes, so let’s explore them…
Beam Length
A pallet rack beam connects to pallet rack frames and forms the shelf level of a pallet rack system. Beams are integral to the structure of your pallets as they hold the weight of your goods between the upright frames of your pallet rack system. Standard beam sizes are 1350mm, 2250mm, 2700mm, 3300mm and 3600mm. And, generally, a standard frame 900mm or 1100mm.
If you are investing in pallet racking, it is likely that you have considered how long your beams should be. Luckily, this does not have to be a complicated process, but you must be aware of the main factors that should determine your beam length.
If you are working with selective pallet racking (a specific configuration of pallet racking where all pallet positions are made immediately accessible from the aisle), then your beam length should be long enough to support two pallets. But, not just that, spaces are necessary between pallets as it allows for easier loading and unloading of racks, and due to the fact that contact between pallets makes movements unpredictable.
Measuring your beam length to ensure it is the perfect fit for your storage space is essential for the efficiency of your storage solution. Essentially, beam length and spacing impact your racking’s usability. Always ensure that your racking, with the support of the fitted beams, will be effective in supporting your products.
Pallet sizes
Pallets are structures that provide a foundation for storing of goods, or transporting goods. Pallets can be made from a variety of different materials including wood, metal and plastic. Choosing the right pallets for your warehouse takes much consideration, as the styles vary considerably: from reversible, two-way entry pallets, to open boarded four-way entry pallet.
On top of that, knowing what pallet size to invest in can be an overwhelming ad confusing process. A standard pallet size in the UK have the standardised dimensions within 120(cm) x 100(cm) x 220(cm). The size classification of your pallet is determined by the height of the goods. If you are looking to get pallets shipped for your warehouse with minimum fuss and if the size of the pallet supports your goods adequately, then a standard UK pallet size may be the most time effective option.
When obtaining quotes, the pallet height limit is an area to consider. The three standard heights of stacked pallets are quarter pallets, half pallets and full pallets. As aforementioned, the maximum pallet height should not exceed the height limit of 220cm when fully loaded in order to comply with safety regulations. To be sure of the exact size of your pallet, ensure the measurement is being taken from the ground to the height point of the stacked goods.
There are many pallet size guides available to ensure your chosen pallet is the perfect fit for your storage requirements. Micro, quarter, half, full and oversized pallets are available, and in order to ensure you are investing in the right system, calculating the dimensions of your loaded pallet is important.
For reference, if you were to compare a micro pallet size to an oversized pallet, the different is substantial. The max weight that a micro pallet size can hold is 150kg, whereas an oversized pallet can hold up to 1200kg of goods.
If your goods happen to exceed the standard dimensions, then an additional fee is incurred as the consignment is considered oversized.
