Looking to Maximise Your Space with Push Back Warehouse Racking?

At DC Space & Storage Solutions, we design, supply and install push back racking systems tailored to your warehouse operations. Our team takes into account pallet weights and dimensions, racking height, eave clearance and floor load capacity to ensure your system is engineered for safety and performance.

With over 30 years’ experience in warehouse racking and storage solutions, we provide industry knowledge and trusted expertise to help you achieve greater storage density while maintaining compliance and efficiency. We also carry out racking repairs and SARI-approved racking inspections, giving you full confidence that your storage equipment is safe, compliant and maintained to the highest standards.

What is Push Back Pallet Racking?

Push back pallet racking is a dynamic system that increases storage capacity by allowing pallets to be stored several positions deep on a slight incline. When a new pallet is placed onto the rack, it pushes the existing pallets backwards along roller beds or shuttles. When the front pallet is removed, the remaining pallets automatically move forward to the pick face.

This controlled movement minimises forklift travel inside the structure and reduces potential pallet damage. A push back pallet rack system operates on a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) basis, making it particularly efficient for fast-moving products and operations that require high selectivity within a compact footprint.

How Does Push Back Racking Work?

Push back warehouse racking uses shuttles or roller beds mounted on a slight incline to move pallets within the structure. When a new pallet is loaded, it pushes the existing pallets backwards along the track. When the front pallet is removed, the remaining pallets slide forward automatically in a controlled movement. This design makes loading and unloading faster, safer and more efficient, while supporting effective stock control.

The system works on a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) basis, with forklifts always accessing pallets from a single aisle, reducing travel and increasing storage density.

  • Push back with shuttles: Each pallet, except the last one, is placed on a shuttle that runs smoothly along rails. The incline ensures controlled movement towards the pick face when pallets are retrieved.

  • Push back roller racking: Pallets sit on roller beds fixed within the racking structure. The incline allows pallets to move forward as loads are removed.

Both configurations provide reliable, space-saving storage with reduced risk of pallet damage.

Who Do We Recommend Push Back Racking Systems For?

Push back pallet racks are an excellent solution for businesses that need to increase storage density without expanding their footprint. They are ideal for warehouses with a wide range of SKUs where each lane can be dedicated to a specific product line.

We recommend push back racking systems for industries such as:

•    Food and drink distribution
•    Retail and wholesale supply chains
•    Manufacturing and automotive parts
•    Chilled and frozen storage facilities

Because forklifts only need to access the front of the racking, the system improves operating speeds and reduces risks in busy warehouse environments.

Push Back Racking Cost and Considerations

The cost of push back racking depends on the system design, storage depth, pallet weights and the choice between roller or shuttle systems. While push back racking usually requires a higher upfront investment than standard pallet racking, it delivers strong returns through increased storage capacity, faster handling and reduced warehouse space requirements.

In terms of cost positioning, push back racking sits between adjustable pallet racking and more complex systems such as mobile or automated racking, making it a practical middle ground for many businesses.
